The University of Arizona is committed to providing equitable access to education and employment including the opportunity to participate in programs and activities of the University.

Our commitment in reflected in University policies and practices, which support the promotion of equality and the prohibitions against sex discrimination contained in Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

Generally a school must ensure that students are provided with equitable opportunities to participate in sports; equitable and proportional scholarship provision; and substantial similarity in the provision of benefits, services and facilities.

Under Title IX, there are three independent ways for universities to show that they are providing their students with equal opportunities to participate in sports. A school must show any one of the following:

  • The percentages of male and female athletes are about the same as the percentages of male and female students enrolled, or
  • The school has a history and continuing practice of expanding athletic opportunities for the underrepresented sex, or
  • The school is fully and effectively meeting its students’ interests and abilities to participate in sports.
